How to Care for and Wash Egyptian Cotton Bedding

Why Proper Care Matters
Egyptian cotton bedding is one of the finest investments you can make for your bedroom. The long-staple fibres that make it so soft and durable are also surprisingly easy to maintain — as long as you follow a few simple rules. Treat it well and it will reward you with years of hotel-quality comfort. Treat it carelessly and even the best bedding will deteriorate faster than it should.
Washing Egyptian Cotton Bedding
Temperature
Always wash Egyptian cotton bedding at 40°C or below. Higher temperatures can weaken the fibres over time, cause shrinkage, and fade colours. A cool 30°C wash is ideal for regular maintenance and is also kinder to the environment.
Detergent
Use a mild, liquid detergent rather than a powder. Powder detergents can leave residue in the weave, making the fabric feel stiff. Avoid detergents with optical brighteners or bleach, which can damage the fibres and affect colour over time. A small amount goes a long way — too much detergent is one of the most common causes of bedding losing its softness.
Wash Cycle
Select a gentle or delicate cycle with a slow spin speed (800–1000 rpm). A fast spin can crease the fabric heavily and stress the weave. Wash bedding separately from heavier items like jeans or towels to avoid abrasion.
Fabric Softener
You don't need it — and it can actually reduce absorbency and leave a coating on the fibres. Egyptian cotton naturally softens with each wash. Skip the softener and let the fabric do its thing.
Drying Egyptian Cotton Bedding
Air Drying (Recommended)
The best way to dry Egyptian cotton bedding is to air dry on a line or airer, away from direct sunlight. UV exposure can fade colours and weaken fibres over time. Shake the bedding out before hanging to reduce creasing.
Tumble Drying
If you use a tumble dryer, select a low heat setting and remove the bedding while it is still slightly damp. Over-drying causes shrinkage and makes the fabric feel rough. A short, cool tumble followed by air drying is a good compromise.
Ironing
Egyptian cotton irons beautifully. Use a medium-to-high heat setting while the fabric is still slightly damp for the best results. Iron on the reverse side to protect any decorative finishes. If you prefer a more relaxed look, simply smooth the bedding by hand when making the bed — the natural weight of Egyptian cotton means it settles well without ironing.
Storage
Store clean bedding in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space. Avoid plastic bags or airtight containers, which can trap moisture and cause musty odours. A linen cupboard or breathable cotton storage bag is ideal. Fold neatly to minimise creasing and rotate your sets so each one gets equal use.
Quick Care Checklist
- ✅ Wash at 30–40°C on a gentle cycle
- ✅ Use a mild liquid detergent — less is more
- ✅ Skip the fabric softener
- ✅ Air dry away from direct sunlight
- ✅ Tumble dry on low if needed — remove while slightly damp
- ✅ Iron on medium-high heat while damp for a crisp finish
- ✅ Store in a cool, breathable space
How Often Should You Wash Your Bedding?
As a general rule, wash your bedding every one to two weeks. This keeps it fresh without over-washing, which is the main cause of premature wear. Having two sets in rotation makes this easy — one on the bed, one in the wash.
