How to Choose a Mattress Protector – GSM, Materials & What to Look For

Why Use a Mattress Protector?

A good mattress protector extends the life of your mattress by shielding it from spills, sweat, allergens, and dust mites. It also keeps your bed feeling fresher for longer — and most are fully machine washable, unlike the mattress itself.

What Is GSM and Why Does It Matter?

GSM stands for grams per square metre — the standard measure of fabric weight and density. In mattress protectors, it determines how much cushioning, absorbency, and warmth the filling provides.

  • 100–150 GSM — Lightweight and cooling. Ideal for warmer sleepers or summer months. Thin profile, barely noticeable under a fitted sheet.
  • 150–250 GSM — Mid-weight. The most versatile range — good absorbency, a little extra comfort, and suitable year-round.
  • 250–400 GSM — Thick and plush. Adds noticeable cushioning and warmth — popular for older mattresses or anyone who wants a softer sleeping surface.
  • 400 GSM+ — Mattress topper territory. Significant comfort enhancement, but check your fitted sheet depth to ensure it still fits.

Key Materials Explained

Cotton: Naturally breathable and soft. Cotton-filled or cotton-topped protectors are hypoallergenic and comfortable for most sleepers. Look for a cotton terry or quilted cotton surface for maximum absorbency.

Bamboo: Naturally thermoregulating and antibacterial. Bamboo-blend protectors are a good choice for hot sleepers or allergy sufferers.

Polyester / Microfibre: Budget-friendly and quick-drying. Less breathable than natural fibres but durable and easy to care for.

Waterproof membrane: Often found on the underside of cotton or bamboo protectors. Blocks liquids without the crinkly feeling of old-fashioned PVC covers. Essential for young children or anyone prone to spills.

What Else to Look For

Fitted or full-encasement? Fitted protectors (like a fitted sheet) are easy to remove and wash. Full-encasement styles zip around the entire mattress — better for allergy management and dust mite control.

Depth: Check your mattress depth and compare with the protector's pocket depth. Most standard UK mattresses are 25–30 cm deep; memory foam and hybrid mattresses can be deeper.

Care: Look for a protector that washes at 60°C to kill dust mites and bacteria effectively.

Which Mattress Protector Is Right for You?

  • Hot sleeper — lightweight bamboo or cotton, 100–150 GSM
  • Families with young children — waterproof, mid-weight cotton, 150–250 GSM
  • Allergy sufferers — full-encasement or allergen-barrier fitted style
  • Older or firmer mattress — plush quilted, 250–400 GSM for added comfort
