Thread Count Explained – What It Means and Why It Matters for Bed Sheets
Share
What Is Thread Count?
Thread count refers to the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric — counting both the horizontal (weft) and vertical (warp) threads. It's often used as a shorthand for quality, but it's only one part of the picture.
Does a Higher Thread Count Always Mean Better Quality?
Not necessarily. Thread count matters most between 200 and 600 TC for standard weaves. Beyond 600 TC, manufacturers sometimes twist multiple thinner threads together and count each strand individually — a technique that inflates the number without improving feel or durability.
The fibre quality, weave type, and finishing process are equally — if not more — important than the number alone.
Thread Count by Fabric Type
Percale (200–400 TC): A plain, one-over-one-under weave. Crisp, cool, and breathable — ideal for warmer sleepers and summer months.
Sateen (300–600 TC): A four-over-one-under weave that creates a silky, lustrous surface. Softer and heavier than percale, better suited to cooler nights.
Egyptian Cotton (200–600 TC): Long-staple fibres spun into finer yarns. A 400 TC Egyptian cotton sheet will feel noticeably superior to a 400 TC sheet made from short-staple cotton.
What Thread Count Should You Choose?
As a practical guide for UK shoppers:
- 200–300 TC — Crisp, durable, great for everyday use and warmer sleepers.
- 300–400 TC — The sweet spot for most people: soft, breathable, and long-lasting.
- 400–600 TC — Luxuriously smooth, especially in sateen weaves. Worth the investment if you prioritise a hotel-feel finish.
- 600+ TC — Approach with caution. Check the fibre quality; the TC figure alone can be misleading.
Beyond Thread Count: What Else to Look For
Fibre length: Long-staple or extra-long-staple (ELS) cotton — such as Egyptian or Pima — produces smoother, stronger, more pill-resistant sheets.
Weave: Percale for cool and crisp; sateen for soft and smooth.
Finishing: Pre-washed or stonewashed sheets are softer from the first use and tend to get better with every wash.
