Tog Rating by Season – Which Duvet Tog Is Right for You?

What Is a Tog Rating?

Tog is the unit used to measure a duvet's thermal resistance — in other words, how well it traps warmth. The higher the tog, the warmer the duvet. It's a standardised scale, so a 10.5 tog duvet will perform consistently regardless of the brand or filling.

Tog Ratings at a Glance

  • 1–3 tog: Very lightweight. Designed for warm summer nights or very warm bedrooms.
  • 4.5 tog: Light summer duvet. Ideal for warm sleepers or rooms above 24°C.
  • 7.5 tog: All-seasons middle weight. Good for spring and autumn, or cool summer nights.
  • 10.5 tog: The UK standard year-round duvet. Suits most sleepers in a typical centrally heated bedroom (around 16–19°C).
  • 13.5 tog: Warm winter duvet. Best for cold bedrooms, older properties without central heating, or cold sleepers.
  • 15 tog+: Extra-warm. For very cold rooms or sleepers who feel the cold significantly.

Tog by Season

Summer (June–August): 4.5 tog or below. A light cotton or bamboo duvet keeps things cool and breathable on warm nights.

Spring & Autumn (March–May, September–November): 7.5–10.5 tog. UK temperatures are unpredictable in these months; a 10.5 tog with a lightweight throw nearby is a practical combination.

Winter (December–February): 10.5–13.5 tog. British winters vary significantly by region. If you sleep in a cold room or an older property, go for 13.5 tog without hesitation.

All-Seasons Duvets

Many duvets come as a combination set — a 4.5 tog and a 9 tog that button together to create a 13.5 tog winter duvet. This is an efficient solution if you want one product to cover all year rather than storing separate duvets.

Adjusting for Your Bedroom Temperature

Room temperature is the biggest variable. The Sleep Foundation recommends a bedroom temperature of around 16–19°C for adults. As a rule of thumb:

  • Below 16°C — go up one tog rating
  • Above 21°C — go down one tog rating
  • Hot sleeper — reduce by one tog from the seasonal recommendation
  • Cold sleeper — increase by one tog from the seasonal recommendation

Filling Type vs Tog Rating

Tog measures warmth, but the filling determines feel, breathability, and weight. A 10.5 tog goose down duvet will feel much lighter than a 10.5 tog hollowfibre duvet, even though they offer similar thermal performance. Choose the filling to match your comfort preference; choose the tog to match your temperature needs.
